Using canned tomato sauce instead of fresh tomatoes?

I want to make a recipe for marinara sauce but it calls for 10 lbs tomatoes (about 30 medium). The recipe tells you to puree the tomatoes later on. First of all, how many ounces of canned tomato sauce would I use? And if I decide to go ahead with the fresh tomatoes, what kind do I buy?
